I can’t believe it—I cried.
I remember watching my team shake hands at the end of what must have been a big playoff loss. The camera zoomed in on a super sad-looking Mike Palmateer, and my little heart just sank.
I was only three or four years old, but hockey had already grabbed me.
It all started one cold February night in 1972.
At my aunt’s place. My parents, barely fresh off the plane, would get to know a side of aunty they hadn’t recognized. It was obvious she was already a die-hard Leafs fan, screaming at the TV, cheering for the boys in blue.
My parents watched, probably confused, but slowly, something amazing happened… and it didn’t take many Saturday nights at all.
From that moment on—my parents, my sister, and eventually me—we’d all cheer for the blue and white, and any other team with our flag planted in the middle of a sweater.
We were hooked.
To say I fell in love with hockey that night at 3 years old would be an understatement. It wasn’t just about the game—it was about the passion, the players, and eventually… the cards.
